Heroes Square - Budapest (3)

Heroes Square is located at the end of Andrassy Boulevard. It is a vast open space with the Millenium Monument in the center. The monument name derives from timing of the construction of this area, which began in 1896, the 1000th anniversary of Hungarian history marked as the leaders of seven tribes founded Hungary in the 9th century. Construction was completed in 1929. Here is a photo of the square.

In the center of the square is column with this figure on the top.

The figure is Archangel Gabriel. In his right hand he holds the crown of St. Istvan the first king of Hungary. In his left hand the angel holds a cross, representing the cross given to St. Istvan by the Pope for his work to convert Hungary to Christianity.
