Trip to Maine - Aug 2010, More Acton Fair (4)
Beyond the animal competitions and rides at Acton Fair the other big attraction is fair foods, which can only be bought at the fair once a year - and with good reason, they are all high in sugar, salt, or oil (somtimes all 3 combined - yum!).
My favorite fair food is Fried Dough. This stuff is deadly...good. Basically it is some kind of dough that is then fried in a giant vat of oil (we are talking a vat of boiling oil about 1 meter wide and half a meter deep, mmm mmm good). When the dough is done being fried you get the greasy mass in one piece. Then comes the fun part, putting on the toppings, because it being greasy and fried is not enough! Its a sweet kind of thing so the toppings are sweet, powdered sugar, cinnamon, jams, even whipped cream! Personally I like a little powdered sugar and some cinnamon on top!
Needless to say the Fried Dough stand was one of my first stops :-)
Another fair goody is the homemade soda, including sasparilla and birch beer...
I also strolled through the Grange Hall (Exhibition Hall for competition winners) to see all the wierd color and sized vegetables, purple beans, giant pumpkins and squash, although they weren't there for eating, just on display. Here is a pic with my sis and Jak to remember Jak's 1st Acton Fair!
Lastly, there was no food involved here, but I did learn a little something about where milk comes from!
PS - My dinner that night at the fair was a large order of french fries! No wonder I gained some weight on my trip to Maine!
